Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Blessed ashes are imposed on our foreheads in the sign of the cross with the words: 'Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.' It is a day of fasting and abstinence, opening forty days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in preparation for Easter.
