This feast recalls two events: the discovery of the Cross of Christ in Jerusalem by the Empress Helen in 326, and the return of the precious Cross from Persian captivity in 629. The Cross, an instrument of shame, is exalted as the trophy of Christ's victory over death. It is kept as a strict fast day, when the faithful venerate the Cross in church. It falls on September 14.
