The Dormition commemorates the peaceful falling asleep of the Virgin Mary at the end of her earthly life and her being taken into heavenly glory. After a two-week fast, the Church celebrates her as 'more honorable than the cherubim,' holding before us the mystery of a life wholly given to God. The feast is kept on August 15.
