St. Anthony the Abbot, Father of Monasticism
Anthony (251–356) heard the Gospel call to sell everything and follow Christ, and became the father of monasticism, drawing thousands into the Egyptian desert. His battles with temptation inspired artists for centuries. He is invoked for the healing of skin ailments and beloved as the protector of animals, especially in Italy where farm animals are blessed on his feast.
