Agatha died a martyr in Catania, Sicily, around 251 during the persecution of Decius, and her steadfast faith has made her one of the most beloved saints of southern Italy. She is the patron of nurses and of those suffering from breast cancer. In Sicily her feast is kept with special sweets shaped in her honor.
