Valentine was a priest of Rome martyred around 269 for his faith. Legend says he secretly married Christian couples, and centuries of custom made his feast a day for exchanging cards and tokens of love. It is a lovely chance to talk with children about love that is patient, kind, and self-giving — the love St. Valentine died for.
