St. John Baptist de La Salle

John Baptist de La Salle (1651–1719) gave up a wealthy post to found free schools for the poor boys of Rouen, forming the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He pioneered teaching methods — teaching in the vernacular, grouping by ability — still used today. He is the patron of teachers and educators.
