In 1955 Pope Pius XII placed this feast on May 1 to honor workers, presenting St. Joseph — the carpenter who taught the Son of God his trade — as the model of honest labor. It is a day to thank God for the work of our hands and to pray for all who labor, especially fathers supporting their families.
