After the Ascension, the apostles cast lots and chose Matthias to fill the place of Judas Iscariot, making him the twelfth apostle (Acts 1). He preached the faith and, according to tradition, was martyred for it. He is invoked by carpenters and by all seeking recovery from addiction.
