St. James the Greater

James, son of Zebedee, was called with his brother John from their father's fishing boats and became one of the three apostles closest to Jesus, witnessing the Transfiguration. He was beheaded by Herod around the year 44 (Acts 12). His shrine at Santiago de Compostela has drawn pilgrims for over a thousand years.
