Lawrence was a deacon of Rome martyred in 258. Ordered to hand over the Church's treasure, he presented the poor — the true riches of Christ — and was roasted alive on a gridiron, famously asking his executioners to turn him over. He is the patron of cooks, deacons, and the poor.
